To update the drivers for my Palit Nvidia 9800GT, I should first uninstall the previous installation of the driver, then install the updates or is it ok to just install the updated driver? Thank you!

People say that when you remove old, which has never removed older drivers to install right over them, sometimes new drivers from the uninstall older people to you.
Just install the new drivers, I always do. If there is still a problem, you can uninstall the current driver, then install the new one.
Each driver comes with its own instructions!
u must uninstall the old drivers. unless, that might conflict u Cauze
